EVENTS CALENDAR
Friday Afternoon Walks
We meet at Tom's house at 4:30 most Fridays (1826 N 1500 W; call him at 621-3144, or email taelder@easilink.com), and go for a walk.
Earth Day Tammie Whacking- Saturday, April 24
We'll meet at 8:30 a.m. at the new temporary visitor center, just outside the monument boundary, where a large green sauropod is saddled (this is where a temporary parking lot will be maintained during the reconstruction of the quarry).
Then we'll carpool to our work site. We will continue working up the Sound of Silence Nature Trail, nuking tamarisk as we go. If we finish that, we'll move over to Orchid Draw (more tamarisk). Wear long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy shoes. Bring water, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses and lunch. Gloves and tools will be provided.
Cookout and Cross Moutain Hike-Satuday, May 1
We will be renewing our relationship with our Colorado fellow conservationists, Luke and Sasha and the rest of the “Mountain Folk” who match our “Canyon Folk,” in outlook at least. CEC has graciously offered to provide hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, fixings; we will bring more from Vernal. We are not sure yet where lunch will occur; possibly just down the road at Deerlodge Park, which has cottonwood groves and picnic tables. After carpooling from Vernal, we will start arriving around 10:00 a.m., give people an hour or so to gather, cook and eat lunch, then go walk the Cross Mountain Trail. Cross Mountain is a spectacular, Class 5 and up whitewater run on the Yampa River. It is also a proposed BLM wilderness area, and former site of a proposed hydroelectric dam. For directions on how to get there click here. You can also see April's Newsletter for more information.
Second Annual White River Rendezvous-May 29-30
We will leave Vernal early Saturday morning, drop the gear at Bonanza Bridge, run a quick shuttle, float down to Atchee, and walk the historic Goblin City trail before the sun sets. Sunday, we float on down to the Enron take-out and return to Vernal. More details will be forthcoming in the May newsletter.
